Cuddly Cactus in Bergs Gray Kobenhavner Pot & Saucer

Designers and stylists adore Cereus jamacaru, otherwise known as the Cuddly Cactus. This native of arid regions of Brazil has a sculptural, columnar habit with ribbed, scalloped stems and seemingly no spines, which helps explain its common name. (In actuality, the plant does produce tiny spines at the areoles, but they are not sharp and will not skewer your finger if you happen to touch one.) Cuddly Cactus is an easy keeper, preferring well-drained soil and infrequent watering (to avoid root rot). It thrives in bright, indirect light and may surprise you with its fairly rapid growth. Cereus jamacaru can grow up to 10" per year, mainly during the late spring and summer growing season. Mature plants (aged 6 to 10 years old) may reach up to 10' tall, adding dynamic architectural interest and desert style to any room. Cereus is a large genus of tree- or shrub-like Cacti native to forests, rocky hillsides, and scrublands in arid and semi-arid portions of South America. These usually fast-growing Cacti typically have columnar stems with prominent areoles (the points from which branches, flowers and spine clusters originate). In nature, mature plants produce large, often fragrant, night-blooming flowers that are pollinated by moths (or sometimes bats), followed by fleshy fruits. Like other cacti, members of the Cereus genus store water in their tissues and are exceedingly drought-tolerant. Species grown as houseplants are easy, low-care plants that thrive in dry, heated interiors. They require very little water and little more than copious sunshine.
