Remarkable French Art Deco Wrought-Iron Garden Gate, Sage-Green Finish - 59" x 85"

This striking French wrought-iron gate likely dates from the early to mid-20th century and reflects the increasingly decorative approach to architectural metalwork associated with the Art Deco period. Its four-part composition is beautifully balanced, with two tall outer panels framing a lower pair of opening leaves. Slender uprights, diamond lattice, scrolling volutes and stylized flames motifs are worked into gently curving outlines, giving the iron an almost drawn quality despite the strength of the material. The tall outer uprights are pierced for fixing to masonry or posts, while the two lower central leaves slot onto their hinges and pivot between them. They close with a spring-loaded latch that remains in good working order; there is no separate handle. Weathered elegant sage green paint with touches of rust and earlier tones appearing along the edges and joins adds just the right amount of garden charm and authenticity. 

The combination of geometry and ornament places it within the broader language of French decorative ironwork of the 1920s through the 1940s, with echoes of the sophisticated metalwork associated with designers such as Gilbert Poillerat. 

Once installed, the stepped silhouette has a particularly graceful architectural effect, whether used at the entrance to a garden or courtyard, between two landscaped areas, or repurposed indoors as a decorative screen or room divider.
